One of my rides. Being brutally honest here, its more bike than i now need.. haven’t done the alps for years but find myself looking for better riding terrain, and will carry on when Redecorating, and work takes less time. That rides really nice, by far my best..so far!
You know the magazines we all buy ? they have features with pros climbing steep hills at 6% doing 20 kph ! hands up how many have climbed a hill ever, that fast…..and lived? Hmmn, can’t see any. The fact of the matter is, that any magazine is selling product, its how they get circulation, and advertising. Nothing at all wrong with that.But however you read it, we do not fit the profile of the Pros the bike was made for!
A good example is frame stiffness, do we care if the latest trek is 22% stiffer in the bottom bracket than last years! Hell if I went back to the 2004 model, I couldn’t detect my 5.9 deflecting in the slightest. What I could tell was how well it cornered , and tracked in relation to my alloy Giant TCR ( which was also brilliant by the way!). I’ve had a few bikes, and I can tell you just by changing a few things its easier to make it a real comfort to ride. That’s the sort of thing that I hear is more relevant on the road to us!
Whilst I was at the London bike show, I had a good conversation with Richard at the Time stand. I’ve always been struck by the beauty, and good design of these bikes (Price is a bit yikes) However, the way they build them is, amazing! they pick the kind of carbon fibre derivatives they want, and weave them on site. The thickness, and amount of strands are all done in house. I’ve never heard of manufacturers doing this. Most buy the carbon in, they vary the thickness, and direction mostly to achieve what they want from the frame. It would seem that Time has an original way of getting the real life ride quality we actually need. How many Time frames do you see on the road? Hardly any!
So whats actually happening is that cycling has had this massive media boost, yes, we , as a country are a cycling superpower! But cycling is now starting to be seen as a status symbol to the masses, (well the masses that know a bit about cycles) again it’s not necessarily a bad thing, however the discerning amongst us still do the miles in all weathers, minus 8 degrees to 36 so far is my limit. It’s in all weathers, even snow! and most like me, maybe want to know what the difference would be if they rode the bike.
I hope to do an experiment with De ver Cycle shop owner Maurice Burton soon. Anyone who knows him, knows that he’s a three-time national champion. He lives on the bike still, and always has time for you at the shop in London Road, Streatham. Maurice ,is, Cycling! Simply put, he lives and breathes it. My plan is to do a simple back, to back test using a Pro, and as far away from a Pro you can get ( me). You know, the sort of rider who likes to have the odd beer and chips sometimes ( but not all the time).
Fully featured will be some exotic bike I hope ( Hello Time, and further along i sat through a bike fitting which is a real must if you are in any way serious about riding, another feature for Maurice ) which we will discuss what priorities we both place after maybe a decent length ride over the evil roads that have now become my local roads. Anyone interested to know? Hmmn still can’t see those hands!
As a post birthday treat, I decided to take myself down to the London bike show at the Excel Centre. Unusually the gods that be were shining on me, weather wise weather was sun all day long, I arrived at about one and took these pic from outside. Please bear in mind these were taken on my Camera Phone as an experiment as to how good they can be!
When you move into the arena there was three other shows going on, outdoor show, motorbike show, and boat show. didn’t have the time, or interest for the others so I just concentrated on this one!

Cannondale had some truly beautiful bikes at the show, one of them has to be Peter Sagans, Hulk bike! Paintwork was fabulous, showing individual expression for its rider.
The Canyon Stand was a really popular stop, there was always a lot of interested people nearby, some were looking over the range of Mountain, cross, and road bikes. I myself found I was rooted to the spot, staring at Moviestars team bike..loved everyting about it..just look at it! WOOOOW
ad to stop in at Times stand. these bike have always spoken to me. In a time where pretty much all bike are constructed a similar way, Time still strikes out alone, refining the very weave of the carbon, and other fibres that they use to construct these, quite frankly works of art! Richard spent a lot of time going through the methods of construction, including the wax filled frame mould. I enjoyed my time at the show, The Giant stand wasn’t as spectacular as i wanted to see. Having bought many of these bikes, and currently having a few in my collection. I didn’t see anything that stood out for me which is a shame. Will have to get hold of a current catalogue, to satisfy my bike porn cravings
This Giant propel was nice, i like the idea of a road bike being aerodynamic, A few trends spotted was quite nice to see.
NIce also to bump into Denver Collins at the Apex bike fit stand. This is the cheapest fix you can have to releasing your full power. If you haven’t had done it, hold fire on that carbon wheelset that will save you two seconds per mile, over 25 Miles. Not being a fan of fashionable trends, i was pleased to see the likes of disc brakes now being integrated on the road frame platform. At the moment its for sportive bikes, and cross bikes. Personally I think this is long overdue. The UCI perhaps should have allowed this a long time ago, perhaps they have had their hands covering whatever parts of their anatomy that were being shot at. But really this is an important safety, and performance feature that shouldn’t have been delayed.
On the down side, being an avid mountain bike fiend I know the power of hydraulic calipers. To see so many high end bikes with cable disc brakes Isn’t nice, I know Sram have had problems with the cross hydraulic brakes, but a round of applause must go to them for pushing forward with this development, its the way forward.
Speaking of trends? Now, this one is a bugbear of mine. Both Campagnolo, and Shimano have spent a lot of time, and effort developing electronic shifting. I may sound like a dinosaur here, but having tried both against my Dura Ace 7800, I wasn’t sold, to be honest the words expensive, and gimmick, sprung to mind. Now Let me justify this. I’m a rider who rides for pleasure, I’m fifty, push out a solid, unspectacular 240 watts. I do all my own work on my bikes, and understand how they work. In short, due to my age alone I must be the kind of punter the manufacturers are aiming a lot of the products at. I think on the whole, I will be a bit sceptical of all I haven’t tried.
